Terry Dicken Business Park Feature Friday

Ellen Robins Counselling

Life can be unpredictable, and at times, it can feel downright overwhelming. That’s when counselling can make all the difference.

Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, stress, grief, relationship struggles or simply trying to make sense of your own identity, sometimes we all need someone to talk to. This week, we’re delighted to introduce Ellen Robins, one of the newest additions to the Terry Dicken Business Park. Ellen offers a calm, welcoming space for adults (18+) to explore exactly that.

A desire to help

“My journey into counselling started with a deep desire to help people,” Ellen explained. “Having worked in various support roles before retraining, I’ve spent the last three years counselling in a local university and more recently a wellbeing charity. Now, I’ve taken the exciting step into private practice. This allows more flexibility for myself and more importantly, for my clients. Everyone’s experience is unique – so the counselling support I offer is centred around the individual.”

Humanistic and person-centred

When asked what makes her approach special, Ellen shared:

“I specialise in a humanistic approach, and take a holistic view, seeing every person as unique. My foundation is person-centred counselling, but I draw on different approaches depending on what each client needs. Aiming to help clients understand their emotional, psychological and relational issues, in the hope this will help them make sense of themselves and their experiences and feel truly heard in the process.”

Whether it’s anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem or grief, Ellen’s sessions are tailored to whatever her clients bring to the room. That could be something completely new or something that’s been affecting them for many years.

A gentle first step

So, what can you expect if you get in touch? Ellen offers a free 20 to 30 minute introductory call to get a sense of what’s going on and which areas of your life are being affected Such as disturbed sleep different eating patterns, impact on relationships, social life and physical wellbeing.

Ellen explains,“The first call is really about exploring if I’m the right counsellor for you. The relationship between counsellor and client is so important – you need to feel safe and comfortable. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll always signpost you to someone who might be.”

Empowering people, respecting choice

At the heart of Ellen’s counselling practice is her belief in treating every client with the respect and dignity they deserve.

She said “It’s a space free from judgement where people can feel heard, are supported to explore their concerns and difficulties, and empowered to make their own choices. That starts with how you would like counselling to work. For example, you might come into my calm, cosy counselling room on the second floor of no 2 Roseberry Court. A warm, inviting space filled with comfy chairs and greenery. Alternatively, clients may choose to meet over the phone or online. Sessions usually last around 50 minutes, with flexible times across three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.”

More than just talking

Alongside her degree from York St John University, Ellen is dedicated to continuous learning. She’s always researching new evidence-based ways of working, attending summits and sharing helpful resources with her clients.

“I’m passionate about encouraging people’s self-belief and choice”, said Ellen. “I love hearing about new approaches and sharing knowledge where this might help. Information clients can take away and consider in between sessions may help normalise their experience and can be very empowering.”

A very accessible location

When Ellen first decided to open her own private practice, she knew she needed a location that was accessible for clients from across North Yorkshire and Teesside.

“With great road links, public transport and plenty of parking, the Terry Dicken Business Park ticked every box, said Ellen. “When Mark first showed me the office, it just felt right straight away. It was such an easy decision.”
