Terry Dicken Home Improvements
Terry Dicken transform houses into homes by expertly fitting windows and doors, conservatory replacements, kitchens and bedrooms in North Yorkshire and Cleveland.
A well known name with a legacy spanning over 40 years, Terry Dicken are now moving into an exciting new chapter as they introduce new Sales and Installation Manager, Adam.
“It’s all change here at Terry Dicken! Owner Mark explained. “We recently bid farewell to a couple of long-term team members and later this year we lose one to retirement. So we decided it was time for some new blood and a fresh outlook.”
Experienced all-rounder Adam will be the new face at Terry Dicken for all windows, doors and conservatory customers. He’ll also be the one ensuring the job is done properly! Let’s hear about how he got started in the industry.
Straight from school
“When I was at school, my dad worked at Polar Windows on Skippers Lane,” said Adam. “It was a small, family-run business, and I knew that’s where I wanted to be after I left school. While my friends went off to college for NVQs, I started straight away as an apprentice labourer. My job was to fetch and carry, remove tape from windows, and make sure all the windows were in the room before fitting. I loved it.
A typical fitting team includes a lead fitter, a secondary fitter, and a labourer. I was eager to move up, so I put myself forward to learn new tasks. My confidence grew quickly, and I knew exactly where I was headed.”
Confidence, curiosity & growth
“Confidence is key in this industry—along with asking questions when you’re unsure. I started by trying glazing and trimming, then moved on to fitting. After completing my FENSA training, I quickly qualified as a fitter and later progressed to team leader.
In 2008, after several years in the trade, I decided to explore something new. Driven by a desire to keep learning, I completed the KBI qualification and transitioned into kitchen and bedroom installations with another company. That’s where I met and worked alongside Tim Collins.”
For those of you who aren’t aware, Tim is Terry Dicken’s Kitchens and Bedrooms Manager. More on that connection later! Back to Adam.
Keeping customers happy
“I’m definitely a ‘have-a-go’ kind of guy,” said Adam. “I enjoyed learning about the kitchens and bedrooms side of the industry. After a few years, I decided to take a risk and go self-employed. It was a chance to apply everything I’d learned, run a business, and learn how to keep all kinds of customers happy.”
Opportunity meets experience
“I spent ten years happily self-employed. The early challenges—like inconsistent workload and rising costs—soon gave way to steady growth, and I eventually took on an apprentice. During that time, Tim, who I’d worked with before, asked for help on some interim projects. After a few jobs, he was clearly impressed with my work. We shared a strong work ethic, and soon after, he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse!”
Ideas into action
“I had plenty of business improvement ideas from working with different companies but no outlet to apply them. Mark and Sue gave me that opportunity. Joining made perfect sense—especially with the Terry Dicken Business Park already familiar to me through visiting Cleveland Vehicle Sales and knowing Alex at AutoBodycraft. The location was a great fit too.”
One aligned team
“I’ll be managing everything except kitchens and bedrooms—that’s Tim’s area,” explained Adam. “Think of us as the Terry Dicken dream team! I’ll be the first point of contact for windows, doors, and conservatories.
My focus is building a cohesive, customer-focused team. With a mix of new and familiar faces, consistent training and standards are key. That way, anyone can step into a job at any stage—small details that make a big difference to the customer experience.”
Terry Dicken have a great reputation. The majority of their work comes from repeat customers and recommendations. But there’s always room for (home) improvement! (Do you see what I did there?!) More from Adam on what customers can expect from their new team.
Standards over shortcuts
“I’ve seen big names take customers’ money and deliver poor service,” said Adam. “For me, high standards and a great customer experience are the foundation of any successful business.
I’ve worked across every level of this industry—from labourer to business owner—so I know how to meet different customer needs. Our team will treat every home with care: using dust sheets, asking before moving items, being polite, stepping outside to take calls, and always leaving the space clean and tidy. Simple steps that show we genuinely care.”
Team built trust
“Terry Dicken is a well-established family business, and I want every team member to feel part of that. We spend more time with colleagues than family, so mutual respect and support matter.
I’m improving on-site communication to ensure everyone has access to help when needed. A connected, supported team delivers better results—on time, on budget, and with a better customer experience.”
