Clevedale Veterinary Practice

Clevedale Veterinary Practice provides expert care for a variety of animals. Their services range from treating sick pets and handling emergencies to offering preventative healthcare measures to keep animals in top condition.

A trusted name in veterinary care

Founded 31 years ago by Len Metcalfe, Andrew Knox and Andrew Barber, Clevedale Veterinary Practice quickly became a trusted name in the local community. In 2010, they expanded by opening the Stokesley branch at the Terry Dicken Business Park. Today, with four branches—including the newly opened Guisborough practice—Clevedale serves thousands of pets each year.

To learn more about their work, I sat down with Lily Maynard, Head Nurse at the Stokesley branch, who shared insights into their team, facilities, and services.

Experienced, passionate team

“We have a highly experienced team here at Stokesley, each with their own speciality,” Lily explained. “The goal is to provide the best possible healthcare for every animal that comes through our doors. Our team consists of five vets, four nurses, and a fantastic reception staff. While some of us occasionally work across different branches, customers at Stokesley will always see familiar faces.”

Advanced equipment for comprehensive care

The Stokesley branch is well-equipped with modern facilities, including in-house imaging with ultrasound and digital radiography. Additionally, they offer laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, which allows for minimally invasive procedures. “This technique leads to faster healing times and significantly reduces post-operative pain,” Lily said. “It’s commonly used for neutering and spaying, making recovery much faster for pets.”

Expert surgical services

Orthopaedic procedures such as cruciate ligament repairs can be performed in house by orthopaedic surgeon, Derek Copeland. Another key advantage Clevedale boasts is its in-house laboratory. Lily explained. “Having on-site testing means we can get results faster and oversee the entire process, allowing for quicker diagnosis and treatment. This not only speeds up recovery but also reduces stress for pets by minimising unnecessary visits.”

Cost-effective preventative healthcare

“Preventative care is at the heart of our services,” said Lily. “In addition to flea treatments, dental care, and booster vaccinations, we stock a range of medications for horses and have facilities for collection of equine and farm animal drugs. To make preventative healthcare manageable, we offer a pet health plan. This includes flea and worm treatments, annual vaccinations including kennel cough, six-month check-ups, and nurse clinics for a manageable monthly fee.” Lily also advises regular dental check-ups and blood samples help ensure your pets stay healthy year-round.”

A passion for veterinary nursing

Lily qualified as a vet nurse 12 years ago, has worked in the industry for 15 years. She’s deeply passionate about her work. “I absolutely love my job!” she said. “Caring for animals and helping them recover is incredibly rewarding. Many people assume being a vet nurse is all about cuddling kittens and puppies, but it’s much more than that. We work closely with vets, assisting with x-rays, delivering and maintaining anaesthesia, and ensuring continuity of care for every patient. It’s a role that requires dedication, especially when providing end-of-life care, but making sure animals are comfortable in their final moments is still very fulfilling.”

Common concerns

One of the key areas where Clevedale nurses offer support is weight management. “Obesity in pets is a growing issue,” Lily noted. “Excess weight puts strain on joints, increases the risk of heart disease, and can even lead to diabetes. Our team provides tailored advice and support. A simple but effective tip? Weigh your pet’s food—feeding for their ideal weight makes all the difference!”

Traveling with pets

For pet owners traveling abroad, Clevedale helps navigate the complex requirements of Animal Health Export Certificates, which have replaced pet passports. “Rules vary by country, from required vaccinations to specific disease screenings or treatments required,” Lily explained. “Our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible. We have dedicated team members who will contact you to gather all the information required, prior to your appointment. This ensures the process is smoother when you’re with us.”

Convenient, accessible location

Clevedale’s Stokesley branch is easily accessible to both town residents and our rural communities. “We’re in a great location with free parking right outside, which is a big help when transporting a sick animal,” Lily added.

Emergency services

For emergencies, Clevedale partners with Vets Now, ensuring pets receive urgent care when needed. “Our out-of-hours service operates from 7 PM onwards.” Lily explained. “They work to stabilise the pet and we’d then see them the next day, ensuring animals always have access to the care they need.”
