Spotting an opportunity
“Prior to owning Stokesley Hand Car Wash, I ran a warehouse business. The work started at 4.30am and my days often didn’t finish until 10pm. Since I was working to that gruelling schedule 7 days a week, I was exhausted. The desire to spend more time with my family drove me to make a change. Travelling all over the North from Newcastle to York, I noticed that Stokesley and surrounding areas lacked a hand car wash. Consequently, I decided to give it a go.”
Getting started
“The business was first located near the old auction place on Station Road. We put signs up everywhere promoting ourselves and started leafleting. Every 2 or 3 months we’d drop around 10,000 leaflets, locally. It didn’t take long before the customers started coming.”
All vehicles looked after
“These days, 90% of our business is repeat customers. We take a great deal of pride in our work and that pays off. Customers come from places as far as Northallerton, Guisborough and Nunthorpe. One of our customers drives 25 miles to get here. I tell them the car will be dirty by the time you get home! We clean all different types of vehicles. This includes basic runarounds to luxury cars such as Rolls Royces and Porsches. We even clean caravans and motorhomes, inside and out. Whatever the customer needs.”

“We have a service for every need and budget. As well as our promise to give you the best quality we can. You can just have a basic wash and finish right through to a full valet with full detailing. Our aim is to make the car look like it’s brand new. Prices work in increments depending on the size of your car.”

“Running this business is definitely more enjoyable than the last. The hours are much more sociable. We’re open from 8am to 6pm on Monday to Friday and half day on a Saturday. Leaving the European Union has subsequently caused us staffing problems so at the moment we’re just a small team. However, I’m always on the lookout for hard working people though who don’t mind being out in all weather conditions. Please get in touch if that sounds like you!”

“Two years ago, we moved to a more suitable unit around the corner. We’re now on the same estate as Platinum Motors and Wentworth Security and Electrical. The landlords here are really supportive and understanding. That was especially noticeable after covid. In spite of all the uncertainty around at the moment, the Terry Dicken Business Park is a great, supportive place to be.”
